| When Scott left Christchurch in 1912 to attempt to be the first man to reach the South Pole, he tested his horses pulling heavy loads on this beach and left from this wharf for the Pole. Amundsen reached the South Pole with his dogs one month before Scott and came back succesfully but Scott died on his way back! |
