In 1996 the Katse dam (1) and the Mohale dam (2) connected by a 20 miles transfer tunnel were completed. A 29 miles tunnel transfer the water by gravity from the Katse dam (1) to Muela (3) where a power station provide all the electricity of Lesotho. North of Muela (3) a 23 miles delivery tunnel of 12' diameter takes the water across the border at an average of 4500 gallon per second for the thirsty Gauteng poluplated and industrial area of South Africa. In 2020 a new dam near Mokhotlong (4) will feed the Katse dam by gravity through an other tunnel. It is oftenly and wrongly said that the highland dams deprive the lowland for its need of water but being on the other side of the mountains, the lowland never had water coming from the highland mountains.
